Property in the Cape Verde Islands
The Cape Verde Islands are a beautiful collection of 10 islands and 8 islets, situated 450 kilometres off the coast of Senegal in West Africa. The Cape Verde Islands are made up of two very distinct types of island, the islands to the west are typically characterised by steep, mountainous landscapes. In contrast the more southerly islands are better known for the long, sandy beaches which can be found there.
Through recent years, the authorities in the Cape Verde Islands have undertaken a series of pro-foreign investment initiatives, predominantly tax orientated, to ensure that the islands maximise the opportunity for overseas investment in the region. Legislation including the Cape Verde Island External Investment Law, introduced in 1993, has proven highly successful, and the region has benefitted from considerable investment from overseas in recent years. In particular, increasing numbers of overseas property investors have looked to purchase property in the Cape Verde Islands, seeking to capitalise on the tax friendly legislation in the country.
As well as the tax incentives and legislative changes, the Cape Verde Islands have also benefitted from large increases in the numbers of visitors to the islands. These increases in tourism, again driven by initiatives and government legislation such as the National Development Plan have proven highly successful. Key infrastructure developments such as the launch of a second major international airport on Santiago Island have opened up new routes to the islands, and today direct flights to the Cape Verde Islands are available from the majority of major European and African airports.
Today, the Cape Verde Islands has a robust tourism industry, a key factor for overseas property investors, and one which has ultimately proven to be the catalyst to the islands recent increases in demand for property.
